Partisanship? Not Here!
Partisanship Has No Place in Local Elections
Did you know that the Richardson city charter specifically forbids political party affiliations on city election ballots? The Richardson city code of ethics specifically states “the City Council at all times shall be maintained as a nonpartisan body”.
The Richardson Coalition has never asked a candidate about any party affiliation or used party affiliation as a criteria for support.
Two election cycles ago, Richardson first saw partisan politics raise its ugly head in the form of a single local party representative overtly supporting a “slate” of candidates with endorsements and financing.
Last election cycle we had a candidate who came out as a party candidate campaigning to bring that party’s values to city council.
This election, Richardson is seeing partisan involvement accelerate dramatically. We have seen endorsements from both Democratic and Republican parties. Unfortunately, one party has taken this several steps further by: recruiting candidates, supporting four candidates on their chapter website, recruiting workers to distribute bundled leaflets of their candidates, using their party social media accounts in support of these candidates and targeting this party’s registered voters to get out and vote for their endorsed candidates.
Today, this party has stated that the low turnout local elections are a great opportunity to elect progressives to influential non-partisan positions and to gain experience for higher positions.
The Richardson Coalition supports candidates whom we believe are the best qualified and have Richardson’s best interests as their primary motivation.
The Richardson Coalition opposes partisanship in our local elections in all its forms.
Do not let a partisan-targeted effort to get out the vote, win the day for a less qualified candidate.
