Multiple Awards:
Third Best City
Richardson was named the nation’s Third Best City to Live In by 24/7 Wall Street, an online news outlet focused on financial news and opinions. Richardson also made the top 50 list in 2014, when it came in as number 17.
Parks Excellence Award:
CityLine Park, located at the CityLine mixed-use development, won the 2016 Texas Recreation and Parks Society (TRAPS) North Region Park Design Excellence Award. CityLine Park includes a 3.5-acre natural area with a trail system for walking, biking and other outdoor activities, connecting to the nearby Spring Creek Nature Area and regional trail system.
Top 10 Neighborhoods
Richardson’s Breckinridge Park neighborhood made it into the Top 10 of
The Dallas Morning News 2016 List of Best Neighborhoods. More than 300 DFW-area neighborhoods were ranked based on scores earned in 11 categories including schools, pet friendliness, safety from crime, proximity to shopping, dining, entertainment, parks/green spaces and walkability.
Cotton Belt to be Complete by 2022
DART board of trustees voted Tuesday, October 25 to pass a 20-year financial plan that includes funding for the Cotton Belt Line and a downtown Dallas subway. The Cotton Belt Line, part of the original DART regional rail system approved by voters in 1983, will connect Richardson’s CityLine Station to DFW International Airport and to Fort Worth. It is planned to be completed in 2022.
Santa’s Village
Each year Santa’s Village comes to life with children’s activities inside each structure, live entertainment, a petting zoo and the opportunity to visit with Santa Claus. It is now under construction. The free event has become a tradition for large numbers of area families. Richardson residents’ nights, dubbed “Hometown Thursdays,” as well as its usual Friday-Sunday schedule will be offered again this year.
Christmas Parade
The 44th annual Richardson Christmas Parade is scheduled to start at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday morning, Dec. 3. Theme: “Magical, Musical Christmas.” Deadline for registration is Nov. 27. Main Street Update
The City Council adopted the Main Street/Central Expressway Form-Based Code’s development standards. This rezoned area of approximately 540 acres allows retail, commercial, single-family and multi-family residential, mixed use, office, manufacturing and institutional uses.
Welcome to Dr. Benson, UT Dallas President
On Thursday, October 27 Dr. Richard C. Benson was inaugurated as president of the University of Texas at Dallas. Prior to taking this position at UTD, he served as dean of Virginia Tech’s College of Engineering since 2005, where he oversaw a period of record growth.
Grease/Oil Collection and Recycling
The City of Richardson is partnering with Dallas County Schools to collect and recycle grease and oil during the holidays. Grease hardens in pipes, causing clogs and sewer overflows, resulting in need to shut down streets. Drop off at the Richardson Service Center, 1260 Columbia Drive, starting Monday, November 28 thru Saturday, December 3 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Gobble Hobble Fund Raiser Success
The 11th annual Gobble Hobble took place Nov. 19 at Galatyn Plaza. Events were 10K, 5K and Fun Run/Walk. The Gobble Hobble benefits Boys and Girls Clubs of Richardson and is sponsored by Methodist Richardson Medical Center.
Richardson Real Heroes Nominations Open
Richardson Real Heroes honors volunteers doing great work on behalf of Richardson, Richardson residents or Richardson schools.
Nominations for the 2017 Real Heroes awards are open and can be submitted online through the group’s website at http://www.RichardsonRealHeroes.com.
Nominations close at midnight on December 23.
An awards recognition ceremony, including videos of the Real Heroes and their volunteerism, will be held in the spring.
Richardson Real Heroes, in its eighth year, was founded and is funded by the Richardson Coalition. It operates as a separate and independent selection group.
